News 4 at 4: RG3’s Knee Injury and Recovery Prospects with Dr Arthur Jason De Luigi

Washington, D.C. - In a crucial update following Washington's significant victory against the Ravens, fans were left anxious after star quarterback Robert Griffin III (RG3) suffered a knee injury during the fourth quarter. The incident saw RG3 hit hard while running the ball, resulting in a grade one sprain to his right knee.

During a press conference, Coach Shanahan confirmed the injury as a grade one lateral collateral ligament (LCL) sprain. To provide insights into the severity of RG3’s condition, News 4 consulted Dr. Jason du Luigi from the MedStar National Rehab Network. Dr. du Luigi explained that the LCL injury, though painful, is less severe compared to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury RG3 endured during his sophomore year at Baylor, which sidelined him for most of the season.

Dr. du Luigi outlined the nature of the injury: “The knee has four stabilizing ligaments. The LCL, located on the knee’s outer side, is sprained in RG3’s case. Unlike a partial (grade two) or complete tear (grade three), a grade one sprain involves some damage but not a complete tear.” Despite the evident pain, RG3 initially continued to play for a few more plays, showcasing his determination but risking further damage.

Regarding recovery, Dr. du Luigi indicated that RG3 could benefit from conservative management, including wearing a knee brace to stabilize the joint. While the healing time for a grade one sprain typically ranges from one to two weeks, it could extend to two to four weeks depending on pain levels.

When asked about RG3's potential return against Cleveland next week, Dr. du Luigi noted that it hinges on his pain tolerance throughout the week. “Everyone is rooting for RG3’s swift recovery, but it’s crucial not to rush his return. Ensuring his full health is essential for the playoff push,” he emphasized.

The update concluded with a reminder of RG3's importance to the team’s aspirations, highlighting the community's support for his recovery.
